Indoor Plant Grow Lights: How to Feed Your Greens with Artificial Light
Plants don’t eat the way we do — they photosynthesize. Light is their food, and when you grow indoors, you are the chef. Getting the “diet” right is simpler than it sounds: four dials control everything. Set them correctly and your greens grow thick, colorful, and fast; miss one and you’ll see the plant complain within days.
The four dials of feeding with light
1. Intensity (PPFD). How much light food reaches the leaves, measured in µmol/m²/s. Leafy greens and herbs are happy at 250–400 µmol/m²/s; seedlings want less (150–250). Too little and plants stretch pale and leggy; too much and leaves bleach or curl.
2. Spectrum. The “recipe” of colors. Full-spectrum white-based light (380–780 nm) is the right baseline for greens. Blue keeps plants compact and builds sturdy leaves; red drives growth and flowering; far-red shapes elongation. The balance matters more than any single color — see how blue light affects indoor planting.
3. Duration (photoperiod). How many hours of food per day. Greens typically run 12–16 hours. Long photoperiods (16 h) grow leaves faster; 12 h is enough and saves electricity. Whatever you choose, be consistent — a timer removes the guesswork.
4. Distance. Intensity falls off fast with distance. A light too far away is starving your plants at full power; too close burns them. For most panels: 12–18 inches above herbs, 18–24 above seedlings, and adjust by watching the plant.

Reading your plants’ complaints
- Pale, stretched stems → not enough intensity or duration. Increase hours first, then intensity.
- Bleached or curling leaves → too much light. Raise the fixture or dim it.
- Slow growth despite bright light → check distance (probably too far) or temperature (cool air slows photosynthesis).
- Dull, dark green leaves → likely fine; many greens look “too dark” but are actually happy.
